It could do with switch to knock off uv whilebits draining and also a window to see how clean media is. My tempest which I believe holds twice as much media needs 6 or 7 flushes plus I rumble it with an airline for 5 min once a week. Simply dropping it out once will be lucky to remove 20% of the muck but you will never know in the surge unless you keep going until it runs clear.

You’re doing a great job supervising Tim.

Right a few things your EA pump is not running at 40% what your looking at is the watts used. to see what the % is you have to press the arrows up or down to see this. Then it goes back to what the wattage is. Second thing ideal lph is 2500 the 3500 talk about is the max it can take. It is not recommended to use the max. As for your pond used you could use 2 surges to see how it does. I have also found the waste outlets can be faulty as mine was leaking and the reason for this can be worms getting into the air valve. I contacted EA about this to their customer service with in one week they sent me another one out with out any communication. I replaced the old unit with this and it seems to have stopped the leak for know. I believe its the same issue people had with the tempests. What I am finding I use the surge as a pre- filter that my box filter still needs cleaning . As such I dont think the surge is effective at removing all the muck. Im in the process of making a video on this . Will release video in about a week.

Really appreciate you covering the Surge as there really isnt much on YT about them l, which i was surprised at. I have a 3.5k ltr sleeper pond with some koi that i run on a pressure filter with a retro bottom drain (please dont judge, im building a much bigger replacement pond next year with much better filtration). I purchased a surge and variflow together as a deal for 399 in April and fitted it on arrival the same style you went with. The water has been crystal clear from that point on and i have been very impressed thus far. I do wonder however, how good an actual filter the surge really is though, as it is said it can be the main filter on a pond within its spec volume range. Nowhere goes into any detail on how effective it actually would be from a mechanical or biological point of view. My only issues I have had so far with it was one of the ball valves ended up crushing its internal white washer so wouldnt completely isolate water flow which made cleaning it an issue. EA hae sent me a replacement so all good now on this. The clear UV inspection hose tail (you didnt use it) was a complete ball ache to screw in to the ball stop valve, almost impossible in fact. Add to that it is really hard to see if the UV is actually on through it, really not up to what it was designed to do. With the suggested optimum flow rate of 2500, and a max of 3500 its only really able to be used as you have set it up (and as i have) straight from the variflow in the pond on a dedicated line, or possibly as a skimmer line. Everything else would have too much flow for it (after an eazypod or before a shower, etc). Thanks for covering. I appreciate it mate

Can this be used as a main filter instead off a black box filter for a 4500l pond

was gonna get one of these as a prefilter for my 1300gallon pond but i might just go for the easypod pumpfed and have a second diybin filter with filterpads, these are for up for 1000gallon so i dont think itll work good enough for me as ive got, 9 koi, 2tench, 2rudd and 4 goldfish so little overstock untill i get bigger pond. unless i get surge then going in to the bin? not sure if itll be up to it?

I'm really surprised that EA didn't include a safety switch that turns off the UV in the event you remove it while still powered on like you showed in the video. I've seen many filters and UV units that will not light if removed from its normal operating location to prevent serious and potentially permanent damage to someones eyes if they look at the UV bulb while lit. Maybe something for EA to consider on future versions / updates of the Surge filter.

Silly question but wouldn't the UV kill all the beneficial bacteria in the filter? Or am I missing something obvious? Cheers.

Would this be a good option to run off an in-wall skimmer as a second filter? I’m too scared of the beads.

Excellent it's great how you are getting those fines and the uv is combined , defo great going into a fluid bed . I would defo use on my grow on/ QT and as you have said skimmer etc , i can see this being of massive value to a lot of hobbyists i will be having a closer look at the GBKS Saturday. Ive a Very Small pond of 2000L and ive just switched to the Surge and installed the vario 10000 pump which is running at 30% but i will increase that to 40% now . cant wait to empty it in a few days . thanks for the Video on this . been so informative. Geoff

But are they good for bigger ponds as additional filtration? When they say unto 5k, is that as the only filter?

Whats the intended use for these , Tim ? Most koi ponds are bigger than 5000l and if you had it as a polisher after your main filter most have them running at a lot more than the recommended 2500 lph ?? Is it meant as a smaller version of the Tempest , perhaps - for smaller ponds or grow-ons ? Be interested to see how it goes on further tests .

Is there any companies that eill install a filter system for you ?

Advice please my 12000litre pond i have a nexus 220 pump fed at one end //the other end currently have a pressure filter to shower ,,,could i use this instead of the pressure filter

great vid I use one on my skimmer to feed the waterfall and its the best bit of kit. I also swapped out the uv lid with my tempest so I can have the extra uv in a filter shed and the surge on the outside :)

Didnt expect that tim would you reccomend them as a add on to maybe help with fines used every now and again and is it just machanical or will it also have a biological effect aswell

i find it not very effective as a filter.

Like my tempest and would consider this another add on. I must admit I find leaving the drain valve open when I start the pump helps purge material that sits below the media. Good video Tim as per normal - hope to see more pond visits 👍

Installed a surge on the pond last weekend, and I can not believe how good it is. Amazing how much crap gets through my main pressure filter!
